Fred Hochberg for Commerce
Posted by: Andoni
SEE UPDATE AT THE END.
Governor Bill Richardson has withdrawn as the nominee for Secretary of Commerce. As of yet there is no openly gay cabinet appointee by Obama. Many in our community are pissed at him for inviting Rick Warren to give the invocation at the inaugural. This is a real opportunity.
Now is the time to bombard the Obama transition team at change.gov to suggest that he nominate a member of our community for Commerce. One name that immediately comes to mind is Fred Hochberg, who was the number 2 man at the Small Business Administration under President Clinton.
Does anyone else have a suggested nominee.
It's time for all good activists to get to work. Complaining is easy, getting something accomplished is harder.
This post is short because I'm in Thailand working with an incredibly slow internet connect via the telephone. Remember those?
If I get more time .....or patience, I will add to this post later.
UPDATE: Here's some background info on Hochberg.
And this is what David from Miami sent me about Hochberg:

It would be nice for President-elect Obama to choose someone gay for his cabinet but I think he should choose whoever is the most qualified candidate for the job first. After 8 years of Bush choosing people based on ideology and loyalty, qualifications should be the priority. I care most that he keeps the promises he has made to the gay community meaning I would prefer equal rights to a token cabinet member. Lets all hope all the promises actually bear fruit this time. Don't forget in the primary he had very little to say about the LBGT community and really did not court us closely for our vote. The policies he adopted later for us was basically Hillary Clinton's program with the addition of saying he would like to repeal DOMA. I believe he deserves the chance to make his promises happen and we should all be supportive. I would like to see some concrete action in his first 100 days, if we do not, then will be the time to worry.

From Chris' post, I gather he thinks Mr. Hochberg is qualified, based on his previous government service at the Small Business Administration. While being gay should not be the reason a person is considered or appointed, it should also not be a reason for someone to be excluded. Isn't that the definition of non-discrimination? I personally know nothing about Fred Hochberg. Maybe, when Chris has access to more bandwidth, he will post more information. I'm going to do my research, too.

Public grassroots campaigns are NOT the way to get a favored candidate appointed. It may feel good, but it doesn't work and could actually harm a candidate's chances. Openly gay people should be considered at all levels of the executive branch, but not because we demand it.

When I helped, as a full-time volunteer, organize the first White House AIDS Conference, instituted by President Bill Clinton, Fred Hochberg was a key voice of reason and wisdom in a group of us who were not always diplomatic or patient for results. Everything I have observed about Fred Hochberg since then - his business acumen, philathropy, experience at SBA, involvement in Kerry and Hillary and Obama campaigns, etc. - has impressed me favorably to Fred's qualifications, temperament and abilities to serve as a much needed gay presence in the Cabinet of President-elect Obama. What many may not realize is that, beyond his outstanding business, government and executive skills, Fred has also experienced first-hand many of the issues - yes, gay, lesbian and AIDS issues - that need to be brought to the table in the Obama administration, and would also heal rifts that have developed in GLBT support for Obama.

When you order generic viagra you will never fail at getting an erection so you will loose the fear which holds you back from engaging in sexual intercourse.
I will continue to order generic viagra and I hope that all men who suffer from impotence will do so as well, since to order generic Viagra online is the best idea to save up a couple of dollars.

Rare Disorders are conditions that are prevalent in an extremely low proportion of the population and therefore are not extremely well known among the common public. Since there is little known about the condition, the specific conditions can result in a number of visits to the doctor to understand the implications of the condition. This takes a toll on the patient as well the family members since conditions like these are likely to involve lifestyle changes and more.

I personally don't believe in affirmative action as a way to promote equality of gays-- which is what this is. As someone in charge of commerce, Obama will probably consult this member about just that, commerce. Not what would be kosher for the LGBT community and whatnot.
Obama needs to understand our plight, and having a token gay in some Benetton ad-like cabinet will not be a substitute for this. Either he gets us-- such as the outrage over Rick Warren (which was an issue of timing; the devastating Prop 8 result should have popped up immediately, being cognizant about how this would simply refresh the pain)-- or he does not.
Frankly, seeing as how Democratic Congress-- his ilk, however much you try to present him as an agent of "change"-- has hinted at something as trivially passable as a DADT repeal being delayed until 2011+, I expect this administration to be a Clinton repeat.
