Ask the Dems: Hillary Clinton
Posted by: Chris
Hillary Clinton is now the clear frontrunner and has recruited high profile gay supporters, but as I've written about extensively in the past, the New York senator’s specific positions on gay rights are as carefully calibrated as her views on Iraq.
There are any number of individual positions that could be questioned, from her support for only half-repeal of DOMA, to her dodgy support for the Uniting American Families Act. But pressed to come up with the toughest, most important question for Hillary Clinton, I would ask this:
Senator Clinton, many gays remember how betrayed they felt when your husband pledged support for gay rights and went on to sign “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the Defense of Marriage Act into law. You supported both laws at the time but now say you favor gays in the military and partial repeal of DOMA. Will your campaign rhetoric translate into real leadership on gay rights legislation, even when the going gets politically tough as it did for your husband?
Previous questions:
Dennis Kucinich
Joe Biden
Chris Dodd
Bill Richardson

Amen, Tim!
The gay Democrats who are huge supporters of Mrs. Clinton tend not to like discussion of actual gay issues, because she's not very good on them. They prefer, instead, to bleat platitudes about "the circumstances" and make excuses about the Democrats' pathetic showing on gay rights, both over the last 15 years and also over the last several months during their newfound Congressional and Senate majority.
Until Democrats like Hillary get real about gay issues, gay people who care about the issues should withhold their votes (and campaign contributions).

A spineless president named Clinton is responsible for two of the most degrading, insulting, and damaging anti-gay pieces of legislation to ever come along…..Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act. You parse your words and hedge your positions so much that I don’t really see you helping us at all when the going gets tough…just like the other Clinton. Can you persuade me you will be different? Why can’t you make a definitive, tough, blanket statement based on Constitutional principles in support of equality for gays that you include in all your speeches regardless of the audience. That way we will know you are serious and not pandering. Here is a free suggestion to insert in your stump speech: “Gay and lesbian Americans are the last group of our citizens who have not achieved equal protection under the laws in this country. Our country cannot claim to be the land of the free and the home of the brave with liberty and justice for all if we remain the only leading Western government which continues to discriminate against this group of citizens. When elected president, I promise that gay and lesbian citizens will enjoy the same benefits, protections, and rights that our government gives to its heterosexual citizens. Of course, I am only speaking of government services and I promise to do nothing to interfere with the religious workings of our churches which are protected from government interference.”
And if someone asks you if that means you support gay marriage, simply answer with a question: “Would you trade in your marriage for a civil union and all its benefits?”

I want to refine my above quote that I offer to Hillary Clinton to use in a stump speech to convince me she really supports gay and lesbian people. Here is my revised quote. Hillary it's yours.
“Gay and lesbian Americans are the last major group of our citizens who have not achieved equal protection under the laws in this country. Our country cannot claim to be the land of the free and the home of the brave with liberty and justice for all if ALL does not include lesbian and gay people. If we continue to remain the only leading Western democracy which discriminates against this group of people, we are not living up to the ideals or promises in the Constitution.. When elected president, I will ensure that gay and lesbian citizens enjoy the same benefits, protections, and rights that our government affords to its heterosexual citizens. This is a promise. Of course, I am only speaking of government rights and benefits. I will do nothing to intrude in the religious workings of our churches --- which are protected from government interference. But I also request that the churches do not ask or lobby the government to treat some of its citizens as less than equal. That’s not what the Constitution is about.”

I am sure that Sen. Clinton will exhibit "as much spine as we possibly can, under the circumstances" on gay equal rights issues.
