If Barack were a state, he'd be Calif.

In a surprise, spontaneous move yesterday, California First Lady Maria Shriver endorsed Barack Obama. In endorsing, Shriver said, "If Barack Obama were a state, he'd be California." As she explained it, "I mean think about it: diverse, open, smart, independent, bucks tradition, innovative, inspiring, leader, dreamer."

    Here's the video:

The photo of five high profile, independent and successful women, Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Maria Shriver, Caroline Kennedy, and Maria Elena Durazo (L.A. County Federation of Labor) all on stage together supporting Obama will send shivers down the spines of Hillary planners trying to get a lock on women voters. It says that it's OK to be a woman supporting Barack  -- in fact, it just may say it's trendy to do so.

For someone like me who was a college junior in 1968, the Obama crescendo happening in California feels just like it did for Bobby Kennedy in 1968. The difference is that in 1968 everyone voted on the same day, so the momentum fully impacted the election. Today however, about a million people have already voted early by mail in a period where Senator Clinton had a 20 point lead. For Obama to beat her with the current momentum, he would have to have a tsunami going for him.
