Sally Kern truth stranger than myth

    Posted by: Chris

The latest twist in the saga concerning Sally Kern, the Oklahoma state legislator caught on audiotape giving a virulently anti-gay speech to fellow Republicans, is stranger than some of the fiction that has grown up around the story.

First there were stories on the Internet that Kern and her husband Steve, a Baptist minister, have an adult gay son named Jesse who they tried to "scrub" from her legislator biographical summary. Queerty then reported that a Jesse Jacob Kern had been arrested in June 1989 for attempted oral sodomy, obtaining money under false pretenses and driving under a suspended licenses. The first charge was dropped but Kern was convicted of the second and third. There was no confirmation that the two Jesse Kern's are the same person.

Now comes a report from the Tulsa World that Jesse Kern, the Kerns' 31-year-old son, is insisting he isn't gay but celibate:

Kern, who said he is affiliated with the Des Moines School of Metaphysics, said that he chooses to be celibate, but he is not homosexual.

"First of all, no one's sexuality is anyone's business. It is not even my mother's business," he said. "I practice celibacy to give to my God," he said.

Kern said metaphysics helps teach him such things such as concentration, which has helped him keep focused with all the adverse publicity surrounding his mother's comments. Kern said his mother's comments apparently were taken out of context. He has not chosen to listen to the audio version that has been disseminated widely throughout the nation. …

He said the purpose of sex is reproduction, and it is the function of the animal body.

"But we are more than animals, and we can use sex for a tool of deep relationship with another person."

Who knew that Denial was a river that runs through Oklahoma? Kern hasn't even listened to the audio of his mother's speech? And sex is an animal reproductive function divorced from emotion or any deeper connection?

How ironic that Sally Kern sees the "homosexual agenda" as such a huge threat when it is her own ignorant and prejudiced religious-based views that have apparently pressured her son into a life that almost none of us would agree is full and fulfilling.

If Jesse Kern is really 31, then he would have been 12 years old in 1989. Unlikely that he would have been arrested for "driving under a suspended license" at that age.

When a man says his sexual orientation is his business then you know he is gay. I feel really sorry for him. He has spent so much of his life trying to do what he believes will win him acceptance. At the same time I wish he would grow some balls and have the audacity to be who he is; a gay man.

Why attack an innocent guy like Jesse Kern? So what if he disagrees with the gay lifestyle. Doesn't he have that right? You mock him yet wasn't Jesus celibate? Aren't Priests celibate? I think it says a lot about homosexual militants that they need to attack an innocent private citizen. You vicious attack is unconscionable Chris Crain. I thought you were against outing, but I see you make exceptions when you have an agenda. Disgusting yet typical of militant homosexuals.

Megan, did you actually claim that priests are celibate? LOL! Have you ever been a 12 year old Catholic boy?

It's Jesse's Mom that I have a crush on, her bigotry, homophobia, and intolerance get me really hot.

So, I made a website for her, as a sort of present. I hope she likes it!

I think she is really a fag hag, but she feels too embarrassed to say so. Just guessing.

There are some who choose to be celibate for religious reasons and they do find their lives very fulfilling. These religions include some sects of Hinduism, Buddhism & at least two versions of Christianity.

I'm not sure what the "School of Metaphysics" is, but its teaching on sex (animal function) is classic gnosticism and hints of old-school occult mysticism - not the religion Sally Kerns professes. Her son seems to have found a way to A) do what Mom wants; and B) piss her off at the same time. We all cope differently.

the celibate life style is not fulfilling because we are social creatures and can only find maximum happiness when it is shared. Being "celibate" just cuts you off from half of your ability to feel. My guess is he is proto-gay and knows it and has moved far from "Mom and Dad" just like I did to try and establish his own life. 31 is fairly young in a closeted gays life and I would guess that his parents know and have blamed others for his issues. Most likely that is were her vehemence comes from. Sorry its just an off the cuff diagnosis but it's not like us gays are unfamiliar with the scene

Girlfriends....whenever you see the clash of insanity and gaydom or reason, it is always the whacko religion nuts driving the crash bus. Let's see...Jesus was celibate, but hung out with 12 men and a hooker and never got laid. Hmmmmm.

    1. Chris on Mar 15, 2008 11:08:21 AM:

Megan and Huw: Agreeing for the sake of argument that some people live fulfilling lives completely celibate, never fulfilling the core human need to love and be loved and to engage sexually, every indication is that Jesse did not choose that path freely. When you live your life under severe pressure to belief that something so fundamental as your sexual orientation is wrong and evil, then your choice to live a celibate life is not freely made. It is an extreme step taken to placate family and society and relieve the weight of guilt that has been wrongly foisted upon you.

Ryan, that's a great point about whether the Jesse's are one and the same.

Sally Kern was just on KFOR's Flashpoint show, in which she debated her past speeches with a gay cleric. She did not apologize or recant, but she denied having said them in the first place. Then she "explained" what she'd just denied saying. Then she accused the cleric of the same things she'd just denied but then explained saying. She also gave the impression of being dumb as a rock because she could not remember details about her job. She also mentioned her son. Loving the Hater While Hating the Hate

(OKLAHOMA CITY) I found a link recently to a blog (www.bilerico.com) that contains a comment (http://tinyurl.com/4qdbph) written in reaction to reading the main story about the Oklahoma City chapter of PFLAG and their recording of Rep Sally Kern (http://tinyurl.com/2zbpgn) that catches Kern in her spider web of hubris and cant.

Like the author, I too, am very disappointed with the approach of "loving the hater while hating the hate."

Of course, I respect our supporters who use their close relationship with Jesus to try and gain support for LGBT citizens and other minorities who are used for verbal target practice in the war for suppression of civil rights.

I'm delighted the Oklahoma City PFLAG chapter was able to document the duplicity of Sally Kern and record with her permission the lies she later reported as irresponsibility on the part of PFLAG. This single incident should show you the arrogance and madness that is being passed off as legislative Republican leadership. Not one elected official in Oklahoma from either major party has come strongly to the defense and support of the LGBT taxpayers living in Oklahoma.

Had Kern used race, skin color, or ethnic origin as her subject I bet the rent she would be renewing her teaching certificate today and looking for a school that would hire her.

The First Amendment guarantees both sides the freedom to practice their respective religious viewpoints and the market place in which to talk about them.

However, this same First Amendment does NOT give either side permission to encode their religious viewpoints into CIVIL law. I feel this is where we miss the boat in establishing our birthright to equal treatment under judicial law, and not the ten laws of Deuteronomy.

There will always be a bible verse to trump the opposing bible verse resulting in a version of ping-pong skirmishes with Jesus as the referee.

The writer gives some specific examples of public, peaceful protest that we can engage in to show that LGBTs are neither the doormats nor the monsters our enemies make us to be.

It's odd that our suppressors are either afraid to be in the same room with us, fearing for their own bodily integrity, keeping their knees close together; or they dismiss us as dippy airheads, frivolous and irresponsible. How can we be both at the same time?

Their response shows more about the fiction in their minds then about the truth of our lives.

Until we get out of the religious justification business the more we'll be dragged into its historical quagmire. Look at the present wars being fought around the world and you'll see religious intolerance at the root.

Our LGBT equality will have to be established in the legislatures and the courthouses in all fifty states without religious prejudice tipping the scales of justice.
