Kool Aid?
Posted by: Andoni
I would like to tell you about one of my aunts. She's a life long Republican and social conservative. It's very unpleasant at family gatherings because she has such strong opinions that if you say something counter to her beliefs, she will take your head off. Everyone knows this and to keep the peace we stay away from her trigger topics.
One of her long held beliefs is that sex outside of marriage is a sin and she will not condone it. She will actively condemn any couple that is with child before the wedding and she will not attend the wedding. We have had a few such cases in our extended family and to listen to what my aunt has to say about these people is embarrassing. She's good with quoting the Bible, she blames the parents of these kids, and makes sure we all know God condemns these people.
So you can imagine my shock to find out that my aunt loves and supports Sarah Palin and her entire family, in spite all the recent revelations.
When I pointed out the obvious, she told me that God really loved Sarah Palin and her family. However, when I mentioned other people who had a similar history, her answer was well that is different. That's the best she could come up with.
It reminds me of the abrupt change of most of the conservative commentators whose views I thought I knew. When they started writing about Sarah Palin, their long held positions went out the window.
It's also similar to the Bush v Gore Supreme Court case. Many of the justices in the majority on that decision abandoned long held positions and beliefs, to make a one time only decision to ascertain Bush became president, irregardless of their principles, constitutional law, or precedent.
This is why I'm so sad to see what is going on.
UPDATE: I just found a great video clip from Jon Stewart's The Daily Show to illustrate my point. Check it out here.

You can lead a horse to water, Andoni, but you can't make it think.
Most people who pass harsh judgment on others are willing to make random exceptions when it suits them. It isn't just the conservatives, though we're certainly seeing a lot of them doing it in Palin's case. As I pointed out in a different post, Palin has an appeal similar to Obama's, but in reverse: she's a personality more than she's a serious heavyweight political contender. And as was apparent with Obama's meteoric ascension, people are yearning for change right now, and willing to believe in whatever shiny penny is tossed in front of them. Obama is a shiny penny too, and I'm sure you could find plenty of liberals who've given themselves whiplash reversing previously held positions in order to grasp this shiny penny.
With no offense to your aunt, there are simply millions of people who have no grasp of critical thinking. They believe what they are told and if what they are told doesn't fit the views that they want to hold, they either reverse their views or start listening to someone else.
Oh boy, that was cynical of me.

Thank you Charlie, that was a great comment, I think certain writers have forgotten that politics are for the masses and that expecting a nuanced and carefully formulated speech or discussion is fairly rare. ON EITHER SIDE
The economy isn't the basket case the dems want you to believe it is and gay marriage isn't going to destroy the Republic. However just getting people to the polls is hard enough now the Parties have to make them care.

Well just like the supreme court, apparently your aunt simply wants a "one time" decision so sarah palin can get elected. after this happens, i'm sure your aunt, just like the supreme court will revert to her old principles.
