    Immigration poll

    Posted by: Andoni

The Orlando Sentinel has a great story on two couples each in a relationship with a foreign born partner. One couple is gay and one couple is straight. Of course the straight US citizen can sponsor their partner to live in the United States, the gay one cannot.

Here is the story as well as the poll asking your opinion of the matter.

Wow, this poll reflects overwhelming support for immigration equality! I am quite surprised by the numbers. Do you think the numbers are high because "we" are the only people voting in this poll?

Yes, that's what I think too.

However, the story is compelling and the contrast is so clear that only a real bigot could vote no. It really confronts you how unequal things are and to vote no would mean you are endorsing "America the unequal."

I would like to start a network of "Safe Houses" for those couples who have financial stressors and just need a place to stay for a visit with their foreign born partner here in the US. I have been involved in a binational relationship for 3 years, I am a disabled veteran who cannot relocate to my partners country where same-sex marriage and immigration is possible in the UK. The stress of this situation has caused the relationship to end. I have a home that I would be willing to share with couples to allow them the option to spend some time together on visits without worry of finding a home or paying for temporary housing situation. I would also be willing to testify on the validity of their partnership when and if we get the option to eventually join together permanently. In the UK it is required that the partners "prove" their relationship with the help of photos together at different times and places, receipts of travel and correspondence and the like, over the time they have been together for a minimum of two years in order to make them eligible for marriage. This is the UK way of preventing abuse of the privilege. Hopefully the people affected by this are keeping these pieces of "evidence" and collecting statements verifying their relationship is valid now, so that if we do get this chance we have our ducks in a row and ready to prove that it is a real relationship and not one of connivence.
